Adobe now offers subcriptions, as low as $49 a month
This week Adobe launched a new subscription based pricing model for its creative suite products. Instead of paying a large one-time fee for a perpetual license, customers can pay a monthly subscription fee to have access to Adobe’s creative products (chart on left provided by Digital Inspiration). This pushes price points for products like Adobe Photoshop down from $699 to $49/month (or $35/month for a yearly subscription). While critics point out that this monthly rate makes little sense for long-term users, their logic also points to the ingenuity of Adobe’s pricing structure: its customer segmentation.Adobe has three users groups: the gurus, the freeloaders, and the cashless. The gurus eat, breathe, and sleep Adobe, and these individuals/companies buy perpetual licenses. A subscription model makes no sense to this group and never will.
The freeloaders, like their name suggests, pay Adobe nothing. This group contains part-time freelancers, small businesses, and hobbyists that currently use Adobe illegally. While not ideal, Adobe doesn’t want to abolish this group as many of the freeloaders become eventual users (especially those freeloading to simply learn the product).
The third group is Adobe’s target market for this pricing model: the cashless. These are small businesses that run very few Adobe based projects, startups looking to keep costs down, or hobbyists afraid of viruses or too ethical to download something illegally. Whatever the reason, there are many nuanced situations for which a user or company would desire short term access to Adobe’s products, and this new pricing strategy capitalizes on these one-off situations.
